How To Get Rid Of Poop Smell

Beth asked: How do I remove the smell of feces from a painted wall and a crib? My two-year old son has doen versions of the following three times this week: When I put him down for a nap, he pooped in his diaper and then somehow got into it and spread it over the wall and the wood of his crib. This past time, we can't seem to remove the smell and both the wall and crib smell terrible even though we cleaned them with Lysol wipes. How do we get the smell of feces to go away?

Children love to explore with all kinds of things they find in their environment. Unfortunately, this can lead to some pretty nasty cleaning projects. There are remedies that are designed to remove pet feces smells that will also help to neutralize your little one's odors. Don't worry, the fresh smell can be returned with a few simple steps, and this exploratory "phase" will pass with time as well.

Odor Neutralizer Method

You Will Need:

  • Pet odor neutralizer (such as Nature's Miracle or Kids 'N' Pets)
  • Soft cloths
  • Towels
  • Mild soap or dish detergent

Steps to Remove the Odor:

  1. Nature's Miracle and Kids 'N' Pets are two types of odor neutralizers for pet urine and feces. It is designed to remove the scent so that the pets will not keep marking the same spots in the room. Fortunately, it removes many tough odors and rids the area of them for good. These products are readily available at pet stores and can be used on a variety of surfaces, as well as fabric items like clothing, upholstery and carpet. However, Nature's Miracle also makes a Hard Floor Cleaner that may be a better choice for surfaces like wood or walls.
  2. If the neutralizer comes in a spray bottle, simply spray it onto the surfaces. If it comes in a pour bottle, simply moisten a cloth with the product and rub it onto the surface.
  3. Wipe clean with a soft cloth.
  4. Wash the surfaces with a mild soap and water to remove any residue. Since many children touch and chew on the edges of their crib, it is necessary to remove any cleaning residue.
  5. Rinse well with clean water.
  6. Wipe the surfaces dry with a soft towel.
  7. Repeat if necessary.

Baking Soda Method

You Will Need:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Soft cloths
  • Vacuum

Steps to Remove the Odor:

  1. Baking soda is safe and easy to obtain. It is a well-known odor absorber that can be used for these odors as well. Be prepared to make several applications to remove the odor completely.
  2. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to make a paste. It should be thick enough that it will stick to the wall without dripping.
  3. Use your fingers or a soft cloth to spread a layer of baking soda onto the affected surfaces.
  4. Allow it to dry completely.
  5. Brush off and vacuum away.
  6. Repeat until the odor is removed.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Dirty diapers can be uncomfortable for children and they may be trying to remove the discomfort. Changing the diaper promptly will help ease the discomfort and keep your little one happy. It will also remove the temptation to play in it.
  • Vinegar is another home remedy for odors. Simply wipe the surfaces with the liquid and allow it to dry. Repeat as necessary. Though a vinegar smell may be present, it will dissipate in a day or two.
