Making a Murderer is officially getting a second season. The filmmakers behind Netflix's  true crime hit have confirmed that they are currently in production on new episodes of the docuseries, which chronicled the story of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and earned national media attention.

Netflix made the announcement via Twitter, writing, "It's not over.@ MakingAMurderer will return." Though the exact number of new episodes has yet to be determined, the upcoming installments will delve into the current status of Avery and Dassey's cases (both of which saw a surge in interest over the last year), as their respective investigative and legal teams work to challenge their convictions.

As the streaming company describes, the new episodes will provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as the emotional toll that the lengthy process takes on everyone involved. The episodes will also offer exclusive access to Avery's new lawyer Kathleen Zellner, and Dassey's legal team, which is led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin. Like in the freshman season, the families and other characters close to the case will be featured.

"We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series. The viewers' interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold"  directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos said in a statement, per Deadline.

As fans know, the 10-part Making a Murderer documentary series chronicled Avery's 2005 conviction for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, as well as the related convictions of his nephew Brendan Dassey. The documentary was filmed over the course of 10 years and became a huge sensation, sparking international debate about the judicial process behind each conviction. It also garnered six Emmy nods this year, including Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series and Outstanding Directing for a Non-Fiction series for Ricciardi and Demo.

Given the overwhelming response, it's no surprise that it didn't take long for both Netflix and the co-creators to reiterate their interest in more Making a Murderer installments. "With respect to this story, Steven has ongoing efforts to try to overturn his conviction, Brendan Dassey certainly does, so we will cast a very wide net again, should we have the opportunity," Demos told ABC News at the Webby Awards in May. Meanwhile, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos previously made it clear that it intends to follow up on "any significant developments" in either case.

Those developments are still pending, as both as Avery and Dassey continue to fight for an appeal in court. Dassey currently has a case pending in federal court in which he alleges that his constitutional rights were violated. Meanwhile, Zellner recently told Newsweek that she plans to use the "significant advances in forensic testing" to make her case for Avery.

With Making a Murderer viewers eager to see whether the fallout from the show will have an impact on either Avery or Dassey's case, there's no question that future episodes will be widely watched. Netflix has yet to confirm an official release date, so fans will have to stay tuned for more details.
